Math Talk

In math we enjoy math talk.  The children learn by sharing and talking about their thinking.  We also work in partners and represent our thinking with white boards.  Next we share our thinking and ideas in small groups. Finally we share these with the class.  We are learning to deepen our thinking and understanding. We are learning how to explain using clear mathematical mathematical language and representations.

 James
So the first thing I want to show you is if you have 6 plus 6 it makes 12.
An even number is a number that ends with a 2 4 6 8 0.
Sometimes it is sneaky that it has an even number in the middle.

Griffin
Sometimes you put a 6 and 5 it equals an odd number .
If you put 2 even numbers it equals an even number.

Joshua
How do you know that 12 is an even number?  That is the problem we are solving.
Even numbers are just plus 2 every time.  Then it adds up to 12.  It can add up to higher number.

Keira
We know 12 is an even number because there is a 2.
1 is an odd number because it's by itself.

 Taisei
So there is a pattern  2, 4, 8 .  We know that 12 is an even number because an odd number is all alone.  For example, 1, we call an odd number .  When it is in a group of 2 it is even.  1 is all by itself and it doesn't have another dot to be with.  2 has 2 people and so it is even.

Ela
6 is an even number, 7 is an odd number, 8 is an even number.  12 is a whole row of dots that are together.  5 is an odd number because it does not have a partner with it.

Will
They start at 2 and then count by 2s and never stop, 2 4 6 8 10 12.

Eliza
Because you can count by 2s to know 12 is an even number.

Alex
We know that 12 is an even number.  We did a pattern.

Jameila
We know that 12 is an even number because you can count by 2s. We know that 11 is an odd number. We know it is even because 2 is an even number.

Rami
We know an even number is even because it starts at a zero and you skip one all the time and you count up.  The odd numbers you skip the even numbers and the even numbers you skip the odd numbers.

Morgan
We know it is an even number because it always skips the number after.
We know it is because the 2 is there (in the 12) and 2 is an even number.

Keith
So if you count by 2s you count the even numbers.  You know 12 is an even number because it ends in a 2, because 2 is an even number. 2 even numbers make together can make another even number.

Eva
We know 12 is an even number because the end of the number, which it has to be even or odd.  Because it goes together and is never alone. Also there is a pattern.

Owen
When you are adding it has to be the same number for an even number
If you have an odd number and you add 3 and 2, it is not the same number so it is an odd number.    So 3 and 3 add together makes 6.

Katerina
5 plus 5 is 10 but they are both an odd number.  If they are both the same number it makes it an even number.    12 is an even number because it has a 2.  If the 2 is the last number, or 4 6 8  or 0 then it is an even.

Sebastian
12 is an even number in it because it has a 2 in it.  It is kind of hard, coz it has also has an odd number in it, the 1.  Then 6 plus 6 equals 12.
It is kind of like a life cycle, it turns into a baby, teenager, adult, it is kind of like this.

Anna
Even though the 1 is odd, we always know it (12) is even because it has the 2 at the end and we always look at the end.
